The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
