Intense gales attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 homes experiencing outages and compelled officials to call off in excess of 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The winds are impacting the complete South Island and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Response

This outage seems to be impacting homes mostly in the South Island, although officials say that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have indicated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, and utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a person was killed after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was swept into oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the metropolis have been suspended because of the winds, whereas certain highways and community centers are shut down.

Simultaneously local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Severe Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been termed a "major walkout", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has forced them to modify some of their plans, with several external protests moved indoors or cancelled.

Similar gusts are affecting the nearby nation, bringing a heatwave to the country's outback.

Authorities have announced fire bans for concern about wildfires.
